Bernini's David Sculpture

Image
Bernini's David Sculpture Bernini’s sculpture depicts the biblical figure of David, sling-in-hand and ready to take the action which would cement him as a heroic figure. This representation of David is particularly masterful in the way that it depicts motion and dynamism in the subject. His pose is almost serpentine, similar to contrapposto with much of his weight on his right leg. David here is tense, his face is frowning with heavily furrowed eyebrows. He is depicted as biting his lip, as though he was in great anger or stress.  Of interesting note is the clothing that David is depicted with (or lack thereof). He is shown to be almost naked, however at his feet is a set of armor, scale mail, just lying on the ground. When ancient soldiers fight, they often consider armor second only to their weapons. However, the sculpture of David here has seemingly shed his armor, and abandoned it to face his foes nude.   David (1624) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini; Sailko, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Co
